Parashah Behar-Bechukotai

This week’s Parashah is mind blowing in its depth and perfect parallels from the Old Testament that come to perfect fruition in the New Testament through Yeshua, His Ascension, and the giving of the Holy Spirit. As the sun went down on May 6th it marked the day that Yeshua ascended to heaven to the right hand of the Father, and this current week we are in would be part of the ten days Yeshua told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were clothed in power from on High, i.e. the Holy Spirit. Let’s explore the unbelievable perfection that Scripture announces starting in the Old Testament with Leviticus 25:1-26:2.

The Shmita And The Jubilee

In this passage we are told about the importance of the Shmita or Sabbatical year, or year of rest. Just like on the 7th day there is a shabbat, so too on the 7th year Adonai commanded that there be a Shabbat for the land when farmers did not plant or reap crops and all that grew in that year was for the animals and anyone who needed it. Adonai promised to give those who fulfilled this commandment a triple portion to sustain them comfortably until the next available harvest. Also, during the Shmita year, all debts were forgiven.

This passage then speaks about the Jubilee year, which occurs after 7 Shmita years (49 Years), and is celebrated on the 50th year, when along with the land resting and debts being forgiven, land was also restored back to its former owners and all slaves were freed.

Yeshua Brings The Word

So how can this possibly be a foreshadowing of what was to come in the New Testament? In Luke 4:16-21 Yeshua goes home to Nazareth and reads from the scroll in the Synagogue where it is written,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy), to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the favor of God abound greatly].”

Then He rolled up the scroll [having stopped in the middle of the verse], gave it back to the attendant and sat down [to teach]; and the eyes of all those in the synagogue were [attentively] fixed on Him. He began speaking to them: “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing and in your presence.”

If you didn’t catch it, every promise included in the Shmita and Jubilee years were prophesying and were a foreshadowing of what Yeshua was bringing to us through His sacrifice, resurrection, and ascension. Imagine being one sitting there with Yeshua and receiving that revelation in the moment!

Your land, your inheritance is being restored, spiritual inheritance as a son and daughter of God .
Debts (sins) forgiven.
No longer slaves to sin and death.
A reset to the garden of Eden when man was separated from God.

This brings us to a sequential prophetic journey through the New Testament that brings us to the time we are in now, namely the New Covenant, but also the 10 day waiting period before Shavuot (Pentecost).

A Parable

Starting in Matthew 21:33-46 Yeshua tells the parable of the Owner of a vineyard who rents it to tenants and when the land owner sends his servants to retrieve his share of the fruit they beat and stone the servants. He then sends his son thinking surely they will honor his son, but they kill him instead. The parable is a prophetic picture of Israel always killing the prophets, and Yeshua as the Son of God prohesying His own death. Those tenants were then kicked out and replaced by others which is a picture of the Jews who did not receive Yeshua as Lord and Savior being kicked out of their role as tenants and replaced by both Jew and Gentile who would take their place.

A Reminder And A Promise

In Luke 24:44-53 Yeshua returns to His disciples in His resurrected body and reminds them that He had already told them all that would happen to Him according to Scripture then said, “Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you; but you are to remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed (fully equipped) with power from on high.” then before there eyes He ascends into heaven. Now we find ourselves in those ten days the disciples did after witnessing all of this. Imagine the awesome expectation they must have all felt! No wonder they were in one accord all 120 in the upper room!

Look To The Clouds

Finally, in Acts 1:9-11, Whey were looking intently into the sky as He was going, two men in white clothing suddenly stood beside them, who said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This [same] Yeshua, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will return in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.” Now here we are brethren! Certainly at the end of the age when the Gospel has gone forth from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, and now it must return. He will return in the manner in which He went, and He is coming soon! We are clothed with power from on High now, with the Holy Spirit to equip us to do the work Yeshua has commissioned us to.

These Are Those Days…

“These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy” (Acts 2:15-18).

These are still those days kingdom family! The Holy Spirit has not diminished, otherwise He would not be the Holy Spirit. Let it not be that our entire generation is remembered for having the gift of the Holy Spirit and to only use sparingly, or not at all, the 9 gifts of the Spirit that are meant to glorify Adonai and bring in a harvest of souls the likes of which the world has never seen before. In the book of Mark, in addition to what the disciples noted Yeshua as saying in the book of Luke and Acts, Mark 16:17-20 takes the cake so to speak. Yeshua tells them (us), “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. This is a challenge to all of us who call ourselves believers, and a challenge we can only hope to achieve fully surrendered to Adonai and relying on the Holy Spirit. We have not been saved from Hell, but into heaven, and this is part of what that looks like. No one is fully there yet, but together as the Body of Messiah working together in oneness, these signs will indeed follow as Yeshua Himself promised they would. Do you believe Him? Adonai bless you and keep you!
